Vintage '80s Ungaro Parallèle Paris Black Strapless Velvet Silk Pleated Cocktail Dress - S
This chic black velvet strapless corseted dress by Emanuel Ungaro features:
• Strapless velvet soft corseted bodice (no boning but still very structured) trimmed with lace at top
• Skirt is a black knife-pleated silk with embossed paisley floral design
• Hidden back plastic zipper finished with hook & eye
• Midi length
• Unlined at skirt, lined at bodice
• Fabric content: Not indicated on label, but skirt fabric appears to be pure silk and the bodice is likely a rayon + silk blend
• Designer label: Ungaro Parallèle Paris
• Made in Italy
• Original tag still attached to interior of dress skirt: original price was $900!
• Based on the label, style and construction, I estimate this piece most likely dates to the '80s
• Care: Dry Clean Only
Condition: Very good vintage condition. The only flaw is that the bodice has some dents in the fabric on the sides. These are from stitching lines made when the dress was taken in; I brought it to a tailor to have it taken back out to its original form. (See detailed photo.) Priced accordingly.
Labeled vintage size 10. This item would best fit a modern size S, but please refer to measurements. Fabric does not have any give but structured bodice allows for some flexibility in sizing.
• 16" across bust (best fits 32"-34" bust)
• 14.25" across waist (best fits 28"-29" waist)
• Open hips
• 9.5" bodice length (not including lace trim)
• 38" total length
All measurements are taken flat in inches. When considering fit, compare it to a garment you own that fits well. For waist and hip measurements, double it to get the full circumference.
Modeled on a size S (4-6) petite (5'3"), measurements 34" x 28" x 38"
About: Emanuel Ungaro was born of Italian parents in France in 1933. Trained by his tailor father, he secured a position with Balenciaga in 1958 and became chief designer of the house in 1960. Leaving Balenciaga in 1964 for a brief stint with Courreges, Ungaro then opened his own couture house in 1965. Ungaro was at first known for his crisp space age tailoring which appealed primarily to the young. Over time, he became more renowned as a colourist, using softer, more fluid fabrics and layered garments. Ungaro Parallele, his pret-a-porter line, was created in 1968.
All items are vintage and pre-loved. All major flaws are listed, but small blemishes like loose stitches and buttons may not be in the item description as they are to be expected when purchasing vintage items.
